Phùng Tuâń Vũ
Christ Community Church
Evers Building, Room 13
Phùng Tuâń Vũ ( b. Sài Gòn, Viêt Nam 1958) began playing the guitar at the age of eight and writing music at the age of 17. Beginning in 1990, he taught guitar and guitar harmony at the HCM City Conservatory of Music until he immigrated to the United States in 2003. He has released one solo CD and composed more than 20 pieces for guitar, two of which were published in 1988 by Mel Bay Publications.
Most of the five pieces in Melodies of the Far East for Guitar were inspired by Vietnamese folk music. The eight beginning bars of Nostalgia in natural harmonics emulate the Monochord, a Vietnamese traditional single-stringed instrument. The two movements of Two Dreams were written ten years apart, and triggered by the musical sounds the composer heard upon waking from his actual dreams. The whole piece is polytonal, but based on Vietnamese folk tonalities.
